Online Caroline seems to be an interesting and challenging simulation. However, reading through the text I realized that playing through the game will make you feel responsible (as a good simulation should) and guilty. Online Caroline in particular doesn't not seem to have alternative endings ... if I know that from the beginning why even bother? Also I have enough "real" online friends that may be more important than Caroline.

I still think that Caroline could be the start of a successful concept of online games, because it seems to come close to reality. It still gives you the security of a fictional game but also some unsatisfying limitations. If I look at Carolines Website the whole thing seems real though. I can sign up and it says nowhere that this thing is fictional. "You don't play a simulation, it plays you".

Did you know that there were no alternate endings before you read the article?

I think that if I were to have stumbled across the Caroline web site on my own, I may have signed up, even though the whole concept of the site seems to be an experiment, whether I know Caroline is fake or not.

I agree ... but you'd probably realize very soon where the story is going. I'll sign up and try it out :)

I think it would more likely be an experiement in socialization than in whether Caroline was real or not. I mean real people don't make you fill out a survey that has only a selection of three answers for how I feel about Caroline. It is interesting how much tracking is done of the viewer so that Caroline can comment on what you have been reading in her site.

I don't know how much a concept like this would make me even want to play a game. I don't want to feel guilty or responsible at all - I play games to escape reality.

Online Caroline would be great if you tossed in the occasional explosion. That's all I'm saying.

The world will be over run by bots and where will you find them...not in stand alone things such as online Caroline. They will be in Second Life, Facebook, MySpace, etc. and they will be using your data and demographics to subtlely suggest that you "Drink Coke" or "Wear Levis."

It will be alot like Josie and the Pussycats, only different.
