RAFA_Ch4_ZIMMERMAN_Q

IN THIS ESSAY, ZIMMERMAN TALKS ABOUT NARRATIVE, INTERACTIVITY, PLAY AND GAMES.
THE PRODUCT IS EASY TO READ. MR. ZIMMERMAN CUT MY ATTENTION (NOT AN EASY TASK
SINCE I'M ADD POSITIVE) IN THE WAY HE DESCRIBES NARRATIVE AND I TOTALLY AGREE
WITH HIS VIEW (PG 156)
2. A NARRATIVE IS NOT MERELY A SERIES OF EVENTS BUT A PERSONIFICATION OF EVENTS THOUGH A MEDIUM SUCH AS LANGUAGE. THIS COMPONENT OF THE DEFINITION REFERENCES THE REPRESENTATIONAL ASPECT OF NARRATIVE.
HE ALSO GOES ON TO DESCRIBE GAME AS FOLLOWS: (PG 160)
A GAME IS A VOLUNTARY INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY, IN WHICH ONE OR MORE PLAYERS FOLLOW RULES THAT CONSTRAIN THEIR BEHAVIOR, ENACTING AN ARTIFICIAL CONFLICT THAT ENDS IN A QUANTIFIABLE OUTCOME.
I TOTALLY DISAGREE HERE WITH MR. ZIMMERMAN, "GAME CAN BE VOLUNTARY UNTIL A GAME NO LONGER IS A GAME AND BECOMES A ADDICTION OR A WAY OF LIFE" DO YOU AGREE WITH ME? DO POKER PLAYERS ARE PLAYING A GAME? OR ARE POKER PLAYERS NO LONGER PLAYERS BUT WORKERS?

First, I love ya man but unclick your caps lock. :)
I think your point about the fine line between a game and work is an interesting one. There have been times when I've been so engrossed in an MMORPG that I feel negligent if I don't play. There are people counting on me to provides goods, services etc inside the game and though I might want to do something else, I'll log in to "work." It ruins the fun of the game...but then the designers knwo they are creating systems that will encourage you to log in often and keep playing.

But when a game becomes a job I generally stop playing. i don't think that all players are that reflective though. I also think that there are folks who get professional satisfaction from games..ie. they aren't happy with their jobs in real life so they become professionals in games to make themselves feel needed and more sucessful.

As you know, the news that some game player die for unresting can be an evidence game can not be a labor. If he/she felt game was a labor, he can avoid a death.

One more, Can you believe that there are 9 professional game player to earn over 100,000$$$ every year? it is true in S Korea.
(Maybe they feel game is a sacred work)

Games can become addictive. I agree. Poker players are not only players in a game. I don't agree poker players are workers, they are just losers, because they end up losing lots of money..

As I lost all my chips with 3 Queens! 3 Queens. I lost to a straight!

:)
